Zach Merritt, Esq., grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and earned his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. His career rests on one belief: people accused of crimes in America deserve the strongest possible defense. To that end, he has built his career in the courtroom, trying cases before juries.
Zach began his career at the S.C. Commission on Indigent Defense under Patton T. Adams, Esq., where he helped shape criminal justice policy statewide. He designed PD 101–103, an 11-day trial skills program that became mandatory training for new public defenders, and authored a juvenile justice publication commissioned by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
He then joined the York County Public Defender’s Office under the mentorship of former Circuit Public Defender Harry Dest, Esq. In his 18 months there, he tried more than 25 jury trials, securing favorable outcomes in the majority.
In 2016, Zach joined accomplished litigator Michael L. Brown, Jr. Over the next decade, he helped build a high-profile private practice, becoming a founding partner at MLB Law, LLC, and representing clients in numerous widely publicized cases (see the In the News section).
